Whats in a name?

10/14/2010

I've recently had a flurry of e-mails asking advise about burlesque
names and help on choosing one.

Your stage name has to do quite a lot for a name. You have to like it,
it should be memorable and above all it should be unique (please google
every combination in a variety of spellings - as you can be assured that
fans won't always remember how to spell your name and you'd be amazed at
what could come up).

Some ground rules:

1) There are a lot of performers out there and it is very easy for the
public to get confused among all the newbies calling themselves ' Kitty,
Dolly and Rose" same goes for wannabe Scarletts, Cherry, Rubys and most
variations on the colour Red. Sure you can use them, but you'll have to
work four times as hard to stand out with your acts.

2) An homage? More like straightforward rip off - and not a bright move.
Calling yourself after a famous performer from the past is a bad idea.
You're not going to compare favourably - no matter how good you are.
They may well still be alive (and you do not want to piss those ladies
off). And anyone typing the name into search engines is going to be
easily confused by the variation in results.
Same goes for anyone even thinking of 'borrowing a name'. One of the easiest
ways to piss off a promoter, and audience and the rest of the scene.
Always google & facebook to double check it really isn't already being used.

So much comes into finding the right name, the personality you
want to project, the type of performances you want to do, they way you
look and act. E-mailing me and asking if it's a good name isn't really
the way to go about finding your perfect one. I can tell you which one I
prefer but without meeting you I can't tell you if it suits you or your
style.

One piece of advice I can give, is play with word association. Think of
the character your creating and then brainstorm words & descriptions.
Take a break and when you return see which ones jump out at you. Grab a
thesaurus and comb through if you need help. Then add in your favourite
names and see which ones work together. A glass of wine and a friend
with a sense of humour will help,

It is hard to find 'your name'. Some people  find their name -
and know that's the one. Others try out names and then grow into them
and others find they've been given the perfect name.
Plenty of performers have started out with one name and ended with another
so don't feel that you have to live with the one you chose.

Oh and my last piece of advice - the one I wish I'd known? Ask a drunk guy to pronounce it.
If it passes then you should be safe from most compares renaming you.

Jessica 'Geleration'

I love love love having my nails done. It's one of those areas
where if I had the resources I'd have them done every other day. There
is always that inevitable disappointment however when I chip, scratch or
break a nail, and with my millinery work it happens on a depressingly
regular basis. So I decided to try 'Geleration'. Each layer is covered
with a special gel that is then hardened under a special lamp before the
next layer is applied. The result should last 'up to three weeks.' And
then needs to be removed at the salon.

I figured I may as well try a pedicure and manicure (hell, why
not?) so went in to K:SPA ( http://www.mykspa.co.uk/) to try it with
an open mind. It's currently only available in Jessica's most popular
colours and I did see a gorgeous bright red that I loved but bearing in
mind the first rule of experimentation (no 1: Thou shalt test, knowing you
can disguise the results if it all goes pasties up) I went with a very
natural nude shade that looked beautiful when on. The beautician was
wonderful and did a fantastic job. The gel gives a wonderfully deep
gloss that doesn't diminish over the week and a half I had them. (Also
happened  to be the week of my wedding so trust me, it was fully tested
with the amount of jobs I had on my list)

After 10 days the gels was beginning to curl up away from the
base of the nail where the new nail was pushing up and 12 days in I had
to make an appointment to have the gels removed as they were starting to
catch in hair & stockings etc. I was disappointed that they didn't last
for the full three weeks, but the only fault lay in my nails having a
growth spurt.  After the gel was removed my nails didn't feel as healthy
as normal but they didn't break of split when I had a manicure later
that week.

It is only a choice between a full nail colour or a french
manicure - none of my half moon manicures (but very few local places
will do that anyway), and as mentioned before the colour choice is very
limited. It's not something I think I But next time I know I've a number
of gigs on one weekend I'll be back as they do look fabulous and stay
looking fabulous for a week. Now if only they did half moons.......

Great Expectations

T LeClerc

Have you ever had a second date where you're not too sure about the guy,
but hey, you had nothing better planned and the first date wasn't that
bad? Then you find yourself having an amazing night and one of the best
dates of your life. Or you find you yourself staring at him across the
table, wondering how come you remembered him being cuter, taller,
smarter and funny.

My previous pot of powder weighed in at 100g and I assumed that the new
pot would be a similar size. Of course assumptions lead  to
disappointment when the 35g arrived. Completely my fault as it states
the size on the website, but it did mean readjusting my expectations.
The previous powder had been used all over the body, giving a beautiful
feel & shimmer, but this pot seems destined for the face & cleavage at
the most. No powder puff which was disappointing but for the face I do
prefer to use a brush, and no shimmer which made it much more suitable
for trying during the daytime.

Made with cornstarch (the same ingredient that make's Benefit's Dr
Feelgood so good to combat shiny skin), the powder really does help give
a silky smooth finish. My skin felt gorgeous after a light dusting and
it lasted a decent amount of time (a relief as it's not the type of
packaging you can just pop in to your portable make up bag).

The shade of powder  I tried (Parme) is meant to give a white glow to
the skin and while it works as an anti-bronzer I wasn't convinced that
it made that much of a difference normally. But it does solve the
problem for those very fair skinned who find the lightest shades
normally too orange.

Overall I liked it once I'd gotten past my initial disappointment. It
won't oust my favourite everyday powder but it runs a close second and
I'm looking forward to trying the other shades over time. But For now
I've mixed it with glitter and marked it for my Christmas act to give a
sparkled snow white effect.

Covets and Craves

The weather here in the UK seems to have taken a turn into early Autumn which just happens to be my favourite season. In celebration my mind is starting to think about what new Autumn clothes I should buy this year.

One of my few clothing regrets is not being able to buy a Alexander McQueen trench a couple of years ago. I fell in love with it, but the rent needed paying so I put it back on the hanger and walked away with a heavy heart. Now imagine my delight when I see this - a Trench that reminds me of that very coat, but at a much lower price….now where can I get some silver skull buttons?

One of my favourite bands is just about to launch a new album! Apocalyptica's 7th Symphony will be out 23rd August.

I've just ordered a new pot of powder from T. Le Clerc. A fabulous company that makes the most gorgeous shades of powder in pastel shades reminisant of Laudree Macaroons. I've used the peach shade for quite a while but for a new routine I need a perfectly pale glow reminisant of a true ice maiden. Their Parme version will apparently give me the perfect iced tone so am excited about getting to play with it when it arrives. Full review to follow this month. Let's just hope I don't leave this behind in a changing room like I did my last pot..

Branded*

Myface

I love this brand. Perfect for those who feel they may be in a make up rut or aren't sure about what colours suit them. The brand is split into three sections, For light, medium & dark skin tones. Each section has a range of colours that can be mixed & matched and will suit that skin tone. You have concealers, foundations, lipsticks, blushers etc. I've tried blushers I never would have chosen at another counter and have always been pleasantly surprised. The pared down packaging suits the feel of this brand, and helps keep the cost down, while avoiding the feel of a 'budget' brand.

Price: Budget - but without a 'cheap' feel.

Glitter me up!

Q. How can I get those red glittery lips, the sparkle lipsticks just don't seem to ..well.. sparkle…

Red Glitter lips - where burlesque meets Drag. The best way to have glittery lips is to forget about the sparkly lipstcks and just go with glitter. Do your lipstick as normal, top with Lipcote (or another lipstick sealer), or spirit gum and then dab on the glitter. (I find the best way is with a dedicated lipstick brush). And be prepared for a lot of sparkle in your life...

Q. I can't find and red lipstick that suits me!

Ahh the search for the perfect red. There's plenty of information out there on the steps, but here's what I would recommend:

1) First decide what you need your lipstick to do and what look you want. Super long lasting? Matt? Shiny? Do you want a strong classic red to invoke the decade of movie glamour or a light touch of red? Wearing red lipstick when you're used to more sober colours is a big change so don't expect to find one that looks natural.

2) What type of red do you want? The spectrum ranges from blue reds (will help lighten your teeth) to more Orangey reds (fabulously bright and beautiful for those who get away with glowing colours).

3) Once you've thought about it (and If you still don't know), then the only way is to try them all. Get to a beauty counter on a quiet day, And then go from counter to counter in the search. Talk to the brand representatives about your search and explain what you're after. They should be more then happy to let you try them. Don't buy however. If you find one you like, get the name marked down and leave the store so you can see how it looks in daylight. Go and browse a clothes shop and see how it looks in different lights. If after an hour you like it, then go and buy it (preferably from the assistant that helped you).

Pay attention to what the beautician does. If she's used primer/lipliner,lip brush etc, that will effect the final look.

If you can't find any that suit you (and you've tried the following counters: MAC, Chanel, Dior, YSL, Benefit) then you may have to try some counters where you will have to buy without trying.

For a young, subtle, easy to wear red.

Try Benefit & Myface. Slip in on with no Primer or Liner and just enjoy the summery burst of colour.

For a strong 40's Starlet Red.

Try MAC, Chanel & Besame. Use Primer, Lip liner (both before & after the lipstick). Powder and reapply.

For a Futuristic red

then try the new Rimmel Vinyl's & Dior. Slip on some Gloss in a darker colour in the centre of the lip.

My favourite one at the moment is a Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick in Top Tomato

Q. Where did you get your candyfloss wig?

The sweet shop. It is in fact a mountain of candyfloss (strawberry flavoured). And after having that much on my head, I still can't bring myself to eat the remaining untouched tub…..

Foundations

Q. Do you use foundation? And what one?

A: I'm a huge believer in foundations - both with underwear & make-up. Make up wise I've tried a fair few over the years, and below is a brief look at my favourites and the almost rans.*

La Praire. Caviar foundation. 4.5 Pasties

I love this one, it is by far and away my favourite. Despite being scarily expensive, I would happily pay the money again (if my bank account would let me). It gives the skin that privileged glow that suggests you've spent your life having regular facials & expensive creams. It provides cover without looking heavy and comes in a large number of shades that help those with typical 'in-between shades' find the perfect one. The only reason it doesn't get Full marks is that the beautifully presented pot (complete with a concealer brush + hidden concealer pot) just isn't that hygienic after a year of use (and mine comfortably lasted that long).

Myface Foundation 4 Pasties

It's no surprise that myface foundation is already a cult product with beauty editors. The entire brand is built around the idea of being affordable and foolproof. The foundation is no exception. While being in pared down packaging, the foundation out performs many expensive brands I've tried. Good coverage, again without being heavy, and while there aren't a rainbow of shades to pick from, the foundation blends exceedingly well.

L-oreal True Match Roll'on foundation

I confess to buying this in a 'forgot my make up' emergency. I wasn't expecting to love this and I saw the roller as a gimmick. While I still dislike the roller (I prefer brushes) I was very impressed by the foundation. Perfect for when you need a 'foundation finish' as opposed to the 'naturally flawless). It's much heavier then the other two, but still avoids looking caked on. Only piece of advice? Make sure you wash the sponge on a regular basis - I have seen some that look disgusting after the owner hasn't washed them but has used them for the last month…

It's not you..it's me….

Illamasqua

I love the brand. I love the background, the story, the colours and the eyelashes. But…the foundation just doesn't feel special. I don't hate it. It does the job perfectly adequately, in a range of shades and lasts a decent amount of time throughout the day. I use it (I hate throwing away nearly full tubes), but can't see myself buying another one.

I admit to being more disappointed then I would be with another brand. Illamasquais one of my favourite counters when I'm in London to visit, And I still want to try a truckload of their other goodies…but for now I'll stick to using their eyelashes, while flirting with the idea of trying the highlighter.

MAC

Again, I was expecting to love this - who doesn't adore MAC? Tested and trusted by the entire entertainment industry worldwide. Yet the foundation just seemed to be missing a certain something. I don't mind paying out more for MAC's eyeshadows (they are more finely milled so last longer and have a brighter colour), but the foundation…meh...
